Remembering the U of L-IU game not on TV

Of course, Tuesday night's Louisville-Indiana basketball game in Madison Square Garden marks the teams' first meeting since 2003. But if you weren't one of the then-U of L home game record 20,086 fans at Freedom Hall that year, the 2014 Jimmy V. Classic matchup is actually the first you'll be able to see since 2002, when the Cardinals fell at Assembly Hall.

CBS was to broadcast the 2003 meeting, a 1 p.m. tipoff on Feb. 1 at Freedom Hall, but TV coverage was dashed when Space Shuttle Columbia crashed that morning. Networks kept with that story, and after the fact, WLKY obtained the U of L-IU game footage sans announcers.

The then-No. 8 Cardinals, who trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half, closed the game on a 17-0 run and scored 60 points in the final 20 minutes, beating the No. 19 Hoosiers 95-76.

Afterward, U of L coach Rick Pitino, who had lost his brother-in-law less than two years earlier on 9/11, said, "We're excited about the victory, but I know the pain those people are going through right now. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."
