Corydon teacher charged with child seduction

A southern Indiana teacher charged with child seduction is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.

Kellen Hubert, 28, engaged in consensual sex acts with the teen in the concession stand area of Corydon Central Junior High School on multiple occasions in November, according to a probable cause affidavit filed Sunday in Harrison County Superior Court.

Hubert teaches at the junior high and also coaches at the Corydon Central High School.

Otto Schalk, Harrison County prosecutor, said Hubert's position of authority as a teacher is an exception to Indiana statute that sets the age of consent at 16.

"He's held to a different standard in the eyes of the law," Schalk said. "There's a trust placed in the school teachers."

Rumors of a relationship swirled around the school last month, Schalk said, prompting school officials to involve police.

During a police interview, the 16-year-old student at Corydon Central said she and Hubert were in a relationship similar to dating. School surveillance video and text message records confirmed contact between the two, according to the affidavit.

The child seduction charge, a level five felony, was filed Sunday against Hubert, of New Albany. He posted a $10,000 cash bond Monday, according to court records, and was released with the condition he make no contact with children under the age of 18.

Schalk said the school corporation has initiated proceedings to terminate Hubert, who has been with the district for more than five years.

Hubert is due back in court in February.
