North Bullitt's Downey commits to Bellarmine

North Bullitt High School’s Katie Downey, one of the Louisville area’s top basketball players in the Class of 2016, announced her commitment to Bellarmine University.

A 5-foot-6 guard, Downey averaged 15.1 points and 3.2 rebounds last season for a North Bullitt squad that finished 21-10 and reached the semifinals of the Sixth Region Tournament. She shot 38.4 percent (63 of 164) from 3-point range and 79.1 percent (68 of 86) from the free-throw line and was an honorable-mention selection on The Courier-Journal’s All-State team.

“She’s just a smart basketball player,” North Bullitt coach David Marion said. “She can score and also gets her teammates involved. She gave up some scoring to make our team better. She has no ego.”

Downey primarily plays point guard at North Bullitt but likely will play shooting guard in college, Marion said.

“She’s more of a scorer,” Marion said. “She plays point out of necessity for us.”

Marion said Downey also had a scholarship offer from Eastern Kentucky and an offer to walk on at the University of Louisville.
