Around Kentuckiana: UK women clinch SEC berth

Kentucky’s women’s soccer team clinched a spot in the Southeastern Conference tournament with a 2-0 win over visiting LSU Friday night.

Stuart Pope and Jade Klump each scored for UK (11-5, 6-3), which earned its fifth straight trip to the conference tourney. LSU fell to 5-11-2, 1-7-1.

• Bellarmine 1, Illinois-Springfield 0: Emily Hollander’s penalty kick in the 69th minute was the only goal the host Knights (12-2-2, 10-1-2 GLVC) needed.

By beating the Prairie Stars (3-11-2 0-11-2 GLVC), Bellarmine clinched a home match in the first round of the GLVC Tournament.

• Eastern Kentucky 2, Eastern Illinois 1: Logan Harvey’s first career goal came in the 97th minute, and the host Colonels (4-13-1, 2-6-1 Ohio Valley Conference) beat the Panthers (3-13-2, 1-7-1).

Cassie Smith put EKU ahead 1-0 nine minutes into the match with her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

• Murray State 3 (Julie Mooney, Taylor Richerson, Pavlina Nepokojova), Austin Peay 2 (Gina Fabbro, Courtney Sheppard): Julie Mooney tied the Murray State program mark for most goals in a season (13) as the Racers (10-7, 6-2) defeated the host Governors (4-11-1, 3-4-1).

• NKU 2 (Aubrey Muench 2), Lipscomb 0: The visiting Norse (7-7-3, 3-3-1) clinched their first-ever Atlantic Sun Conference tournament berth after beating the Bisons (10-6-2, 4-2-1).

• McKendree 1, Southern Indiana 0.

Basketball

Pikeville’s men and Campbellsville’s women were tabbed as the top teams in the Mid-South Conference college basketball coaches poll released Friday.

Pikeville — the defending men’s regular-season and tournament champion — had three of nine first-place votes and 58 points.

The Bears open their season Monday night at home against Grace Bible.

No. 2 Georgetown, which opens Monday with a home game against Miami Middletown, had two of the other six first-place votes.

No. 3 Campbellsville three first-place votes and No. 5 Lindsey Wilson the other first-place vote.

Campbellsville’s women had 48 points and six of eight first-place votes. The Tigers won the regular season title and advanced to the NAIA quarterfinals.

Lindsey Wilson, second in the women’s poll, had the other two first-place votes.

Men’s soccer

• Bellarmine 2, Illinois-Springfield 0: Brycen Howard scored in the 50th minute, and Dan Schiavi added an insurance goal in the 78th as the host Knights (7-7-2, 5-6-2 GLVC) shut out the Prairie Stars (4-11, 2-11).

Louisville 0, Clemson 0: The No. 11 Cardinals (8-5-2, 4-2-1) and the visiting Tigers (8-6-1, 4-2-1) went to a scoreless draw.

In the final seconds of the second overtime period, Clemson’s Kyle Fisher’s goal was negated by a penalty in the box.

Volleyball

Kentucky 3, Arkansas 0: Anni Thomasson;s 11 kills and 12 digs helped the No. 16 Wildcats (18-3, 8-1 SEC) sweep the host Razorbacks (11-10, 5-3) 25-20, 25-20, 25-19.

Morehead State 3, Jacksonville State 2: The visiting Eagles (1-22, 1-8 OVC) finally broke into the victory column after a five-set win over the Gamecocks (14-11, 6-3) 21-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13.

Two Eagles had career highs in the match - Hannah Sigala (22 kills) and Colbey Cameron (64 assists).

WKU 3, FIU 0: Heather Boyan had 14 kills, zero attack errors, five blocks and three digs to lead the Lady Toppers (21-5, 9-1 Conference USA) past the Golden Panthers (6-16, 3-6).

Spalding 3, Westminster 1: Elisa Burkman had 18 kills and Casey Wilkerson 14 digs as the visiting Golden Eagles (14-15, 11-5 SLIAC) won 24-26, 25-17, 25-22, 25-13.

IU Southeast advances to KIAC final: The Grenadiers (8-3) beat host Asbury 5-1 in a semifinal, and will face Ashford at 10 a.m. today in the championship match at Asbury.
