12 Days of BrewLou: Apocalypse Brew Works

Bailey Loosemore
@bloosemore

With the local craft beer scene on the rise, I've planned a journey to get you familiar with what's in your neighborhood.

Each day through Feb. 12, I'll post new content about Louisville and Southern Indiana brews on Courier-Journal.com, including information about each of nine local breweries straight from the brewers' mouths.

Feel free to ask questions, send comments and follow along on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #BrewLou.

Seventh stop:

APOCALYPSE BREW WORKS

1612 Mellwood Ave. | (502) 589-4843 | @ApocalypseBrews | Facebook

Tells us your (brief) history.

We opened May 12, 2012 (before the Mayan Apocalypse!)

There are 3 partners: Leah Dienes, Bill Krauth & Paul Grignon. We met as homebrewers in our local homebrew beer club, the LAGERS (Louisville Area Grain & Extract Research Society). We have over 40 years combined brewing experience. We built our brewery in our current location and are currently taking over more of the space on the property building the expansion of our brewery.

What beers do you have on tap?

Apocalypse's taps are always changing, but here's what's on right now:

Hoptrocution 2X IPA

Fallout Dust

Enigma (barrel-aged braggot)

Cream-ation

Atomic Amber

Sunspot Stout

Katteas Kirsebaer (Cherrywood Smoked cherry stout)

Dystopian Dunkelweisse

Apollo IPA

O'Danny Pivo (gluten-free)

Deals

Our beers are very affordable ($4/pint) all the time. We also fill and sell growlers.

Make a recommendation: Which of your beers would you choose above all others?

It would depend on the season! Summertime our "Watermelon Crack" is a crowd favorite. Our IPAs (Apollo, R.I.P. Rye) are always popular and our "Fallout Dust"...you just have to try it to get hooked.

Make another recommendation: Besides your own, what other craft beer do you like in Louisville and/or Southern Indiana?

All of them! There is a lot of diversity of styles being brewed locally; I always try and get a sampler to see what tasty beers are out there.

What's new?

We are building our expansion now, when in full operation it should triple our output. We always have new beers we want to brew and love to experiment.

What's your secret?

We collaborate and decide what we'd like to brew and what we think would be fun to drink. We release new beers every month.

What's in a name?

Of course with a name like "Apocalypse", we try and come up with names that bring that to mind...but in a tasty way!

Beer vs. bourbon: Who would win in a fight and why?

Beer would win, you can drink more beer than bourbon in a single sitting! ;)

Party animals: If your beer were a character at a party, who would it be?

Either the zombie coming to crash your party or the apocalyptic monster that comes from the basement.
