LSU gets shot at U of L women via upset

Danielle Ballard had 22 points and 15 rebounds, and seventh-seeded LSU overcame a late seven-point deficit, as well as foul trouble, to upset No. 2 seed West Virgina 76-67 in a Louisville Regional second-round game Tuesday night at Baton Rouge, La.

Playing the last 12 minutes with four fouls, Shanece McKiney had 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocks, while DaShawn Harden added 12 points for LSU (21-12), which advanced to the Sweet 16 for a second straight season — both times with a second-round upset on its home court.

Next up for LSU is a rematch with Louisville. The two teams played in the preseason WNIT and the Cardinals came away with a 21-point win.

Holding a seven-point lead with 5:05 left, West Virginia was on the verge of winning its first second-round game in eight attempts, but LSU went on a 16-2 run. Asya Bussie had 21 points and Bria Holmes 12 for the Mountaineers (30-5).

Maryland 69, Texas 64: Alyssa Thomas scored all 16 of her points after halftime, and the host Terrapins reached the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive year. Fourth-seeded Maryland (26-6) next faces Tennessee, the No. 1 seed in the Louisville Regional. Maryland is 23-8 in the tournament under coach Brenda Frese and has reached the round of 16 in six of her 12 seasons at the helm.

Lincoln Regional

UConn 91, Saint Joseph’s 52: Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had the third triple-double in UConn history as the Huskies moved into their 21st straight NCAA regional semifinal with the rout of Saint Joseph’s. Mosqueda-Lewis had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to lead five players in double figures for the top-ranked Huskies (36-0), who won their 42nd straight game.

Texas A&M 85, James Madison 69: Courtney Williams scored 23 points and Karla Gilbert added 20 points with 15 rebounds to help the Aggies move past the Dukes at College Station, Texas. The victory sends the third-seeded Aggies (26-8) to the Sweet 16 for the sixth time.

Stanford Regional

Penn State 83, Florida 61: Maggie Lucas and Dara Taylor each scored 22 points and the No. 3 seed Lady Lions (24-7) advanced to play at No. 2 Stanford (30-3) on Sunday. Ariel Edwards added 16 points for Penn State. Kayla Lewis led the Gators (20-13) with 20 points and nine rebounds.

North Carolina 62, Michigan State 53: Freshman Diamond DeShields had 24 points and a season-high 12 rebounds to help lead the host Tar Heels. Fellow freshman Allisha Gray had 10 points for the No. 4 seed Heels (26-9).

South Carolina 78, Oregon State 69: Aleighsa Welch made certain there was no second-round upset this time for the Gamecocks. She had 21 points and 11 rebounds and No. 1 seed South Carolina (29-4) rolled at Seattle a year after getting upset by a 12 seed in the second-round. Its the second time in three years coach Dawn Staley has gotten her team to the to the Sweet 16.
