No. 5 Louisville beats No. 10 Vanderbilt in baseball

Cole Sturgeon went 3 for 4 and scored four runs, and Alex Chittenden hit a two-run home run and had three RBIs to lead the fifth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team to an 11-7 victory over No. 10 Vanderbilt in a nonconference game Tuesday night in Nashville, Tenn.

Chittenden's first-inning homer got the Cardinals (38-11) off to three-run lead, but the Commodores' Vince Conde hit a grand slam off Josh Rogers in the bottom of the inning.

U of L came back with four runs in the third, but Vanderbilt (36-13) countered with two more runs off Rogers, who allowed seven hits and six runs in 21/3 innings. Brandon Alphin (6-0) took over and got the win with 21/3 innings of one-hit relief.

Jeff Gardner went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Colin Lyman hit a two-run double in the third.

Softball

Three Wildcats on All-SEC team: University of Kentucky sophomores Kelsey Nunley and Nikki Sagermann were named to the All-Southeastern Conference second team and junior catcher Griffin Joiner was selected to the All-Defensive team.

Nunley (21-7) has a 2.12 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 188 innings. Sagermann, an infielder, leads the Wildcats with 12 home runs and 43 RBIs. Joiner had a perfect fielding percentage and was third in the SEC in putouts.

UK (41-14), the No. 7 seed in the SEC Tournament, will play Mississippi State at 4 p.m. today in Columbia, S.C.

IU Southeast draws opponent: The Grenadiers (41-10) will face Houston-Victoria (33-13) on Monday in Montgomery, Ala., in the first round of the NAIA Tournament. The regional runs through Wednesday.

Four Racers honored: Murray State junior Mo Ramsey was selected first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference and sophomore Shelbey was named to the second team, while freshmen Jessica Twaddle and Mason Robinson are on the All-Newcomer team.

Ramsey led the Racers in average (.337) and hits (60) and is 12 for 12 in stolen bases. Miller hit .323 and became the program's fastest player to 100 hits, reaching it 95 games. Twaddle is hitting .308 with 20 runs and three home runs. Robinson has a team-low 2.68 ERA.

The No. 4 Racers will face No. 5 Eastern Kentucky at 4 p.m. today in the OVC Tournament at Jacksonville State.

EKU's Ciolek, Pittsenbarger All-OVC: Eastern Kentucky senior first baseman Christin Ciolek and junior Leanna Pittsenbarger were named first-team All-OVC and freshman shortstop Krislyn Campos was named to the All-Newcomer team. Ciolek leads the team in hitting (.335, 52 hits), runs (24), doubles (nine), RBIs (28) and on-base percentage (.383). Pittsenbarger is in the top 10 nationally in ERA (1.22, 10th), shutouts (11, fourth), strikeouts (282, fourth), and hits allowed (3.07, 2nd). Her 282 strikeouts are a single-season EKU record. Campos, who made three errors in 131 chances, is second in hits (42) and third in average (.276).

Men's lacrosse

Centre begins NCAA Tournament play: The Colonels face Denison at 2 p.m. today in Granville, Ohio, in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Centre, which has 16 players from Louisville, has won its last 11 games, including the Southern Athletic Association Tournament. Senior Connor Stubbs leads the team in scoring with 48 goals and 17 assists. Freshman Mitchell Kraus, from Trinity High, has 25 goals; senior Peter Murphy, from St. Xavier, has 21 goals and 42 assists; and freshman Sumner Franklin, from Trinity, has 17 goals.

Women's tennis

IU Southeast in NAIA Tournament: The Grenadiers (16-4) will face Oklahoma Baptist next Tuesday in the first round of the NAIA national tournament in Mobile, Ala.

Men's tennis

Grenadiers open Tuesday: IU Southeast will face Northwestern Ohio in the first round of the NAIA national tournament on Tuesday in Mobile, Ala. The Grenadiers (12-6) will be appearing in the tournament for the first time.

Football

Indiana schedules Connecticut: The Hoosiers and UConn agreed to a home-and-home series, with the Huskies playing in Bloomington, Ind., Sept. 21, 2019 and IU playing in East Hartford, Conn., Sept. 26, 2020.

Murray State's Simmons honored: Former coach and administrator Margaret Simmons will be inducted into the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame in a ceremony May 30 in Nashville, Tenn.

Simmons, who became the Racers' first women's track and field head coach in 1968 and started the women's cross country program three years later, compiled eight conference titles and two second-place finishes in 23 years. She was OVC Coach of the Year six times. Her cross country teams never finished lower than second place.

She is the sixth woman elected to the Hall

UK promotes Tilley: Amy Tilley, who spent the past six years working with the Wildcats' women's basketball program, including the past three as director of basketball relations and recruiting, has been promoted to assistant athletics director for women's basketball. She filled the position without the title in 2013-14.

Men's golf

Cardinals seeded ninth: U of L will be the No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament's Auburn Regional May 15-17, the seventh time in school history and first since 2009 the Cards have made the field.

High school lacrosse

Ballard 18, Manual 7: Alan Patterson scored five goals as the Bruins romped past the host Crimsons in a District 2 semifinal. Ballard will face Trinity at 6 p.m. Thursday in the championship.
