Red Sox 4, Bats 3 | Votto single breaks up no-hitter

Cincinnati Enquirer and special dispatches

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto made his first minor-league rehab start with the Louisville Bats on Sunday and had an immediate impact, breaking up Chris Hernandez's no-hit bid in the top of the seventh inning in Louisville's 4-3 loss to the Pawtucket Red Sox before 7,331 at McCoy Stadium.

Votto's single was his lone hit in three at-bats. He had been on Cincinnati's disabled list since May 15 with a quad strain.

The single was the only hit yielded by Hernandez (3-6, 3.16 ERA), who went 7-1/3 innings. He allowed a run, walked two and struck out a career-high nine.

Bats right-hander Chien-Ming Wang (6-5, 3.89) lost for the first time in four starts, allowing 11 hits and four runs in six innings. Curtis Partch replaced him in the seventh after Wang put the first three batters on base. Partch allowed two runs to score on a sacrifice fly and a single to make it 4-0.

The Bats scored two in the eighth on Bryan Anderson's third homer of the season. Felix Perez homered in the ninth.

Mat Latos will likely make his final rehab start for the Bats today (7:05 p.m.) before rejoining the Reds for next weekend's series in Milwaukee.

Latos (1-0, 2.63) left his start last Wednesday after five innings and 67 pitches because of cramping in his calf.

Reds manager Bryan Price said he'd like to make sure Latos is "capable of throwing 100 or 100-plus pitches."
