Former U of L star Peyton Siva joins Magic, reports say

From AP and special dispatches

Former University of Louisville guard Peyton Siva, waived earlier this summer by the Detroit Pistons, has a contract agreement with the Orlando Magic, Yahoo Sports reported Tuesday night on its website.

The report was attributed to an unnamed NBA source by Yahoo Sports.

The Magic are in rebuilding mode, having added Ben Gordon, Luke Ridnour and Channing Frye, Willie Green, Evan Fournier and rookies Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton in the offseason.

With the Pistons last season as a rookie, Siva averaged 2.2 points and 1.4 assists. Detroit made Siva the 26th pick in last year’s NBA draft.

Lakers: Byron Scott is taking over as head coach with the vocal support of his fellow Showtime greats.

Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jamaal Wilkes attended Tuesday’s introductory news conference for Scott, the 25th head coach in franchise history.

Scott boldly predicted a quick return to NBA title contention for the Lakers, who are coming off their worst season since moving to Los Angeles.

The Lakers spent nearly three months without a head coach before finally hiring Scott, a shooting guard on three Showtime championship teams in the 1980s.

Scott has been a head coach with New Jersey, New Orleans and Cleveland. But the Lakers have always been the ideal job for the Inglewood product, who grew up sneaking into the Forum to watch Jerry West.

• Players union: The National Basketball Players Association elected Michele Roberts as executive director, making her the first woman to lead a North American pro sports union.

Roberts received 32 of 36 votes in a process that was completed in the early morning hours of Tuesday. The Washington trial lawyer defeated tech industry CEO Dean Garfield and Dallas Mavericks CEO Terdema Ussery in the final vote.

“After all the hours and time (invested by) our executive committee, along with an amazing search committee that helped throughout this process, it’s an unbelievable feeling to have the wonderful Michele Roberts now as a part of our team,” NBPA president and Los Angeles Clippers star guard Chris Paul said.

The vote capped a long and arduous process to replace Billy Hunter, who was ousted in February 2013.

• Lakers: Los Angeles re-signed forward Wesley Johnson to a one-year contract.

• Timberwolves: Mo Williams is on his way to Minnesota, which means J.J. Barea could be on his way out.

The Timberwolves and Williams agreed to a $3.75 million, one-year contract, the player’s agency, Priority Sports, announced on Monday.

• Grizzlies: Controlling owner Robert Pera removed the interim tag and named Chris Wallace as the team’s general manager, signing him to a multi-year contract keeping him with the franchise.

• Suns: Forward P.J. Tucker was charged with ‘extreme drunken driving’ two months before he signed a three-year, $16.5 million contract — $12.7 million guaranteed — with the Suns.
