Quarterback Will Gardner replaced Teddy Bridgewater last September. Gardner will be the starter when the season gets underway.

We're just about 48 hours away from Louisville's 2014 season opener against Miami, so to tide you over, here are a few interesting nuggets:

* Bobby Petrino (1-1 vs. Miami) and Al Golden (0-2 vs. Louisville) haven't exactly faced off a ton, or really with a level playing field. Their teams have met once when they're both head coaches, with Louisville crushing Temple 62-0 in 2006. It was Golden's first year at Temple, and the Owls actually lost 62-0 a week later at Minnesota. They finished 1-11 that year, but Golden somehow ended his five-year tenure there with back-to-back winning seasons.

That was actually Petrino's last season at U of L (the first time around), and he led the Cardinals to a program-record 12 wins and an Orange Bowl win.

* The last time Miami came to Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, Louisville won 31-7. Petrino was the Cards' coach. In fact, that win over the 'Canes came a week after Louisville thumped Golden and Temple.

* Miami won the first two meetings between the programs, including a 26-0 win at Louisville in 1949. They tied 13-13 in 1950, and then Miami won the next seven meetings. Last year was the first time they'd met in a bowl game.

* Louisville is 22-1 at home under Petrino. Miami is 8-8 on the road with Golden.

* Louisville's maiden ACC game against Miami is the Cardinals' fifth league debut in program history, and the past league debuts haven't been all that kind. (1)Missouri Valley debut: U of L lost at North Texas State back in 1963, dropping a 26-6 decision. (2) Conference USA debut: Louisville lost 24-7 to Southern Miss in the Cards' C-USA opener on Sept. 28, 1996. (3) Big East debut: The Cards lost 45-14 at USF on Sept. 24, 2005. (4) AAC debut: Louisville's first AAC game was a 30-7 drubbing of Temple on Oct. 5 last year.

* Miami, FSU and Virginia Tech each have winning head-to-head records against Louisville. The Cards have series advantages over Duke, UNC, NC State and Wake Forest, and are tied in head-to-head games vs. BC, Pitt, Syracuse and Virginia. Louisville's never played Georgia Tech or Clemson.

* Last up, but least surprising, many U of L and Miami players were high school teammates. Five Cards and three Hurricanes played together at Miami Northwestern. Two Cards played with Miami's Herb Waters at Homestead. U of L's Lamar Atkins and Keith Brown played with Miami's Duke Johnson and Ereck Flowers at Miami Norland. Andrew Johnson and Gerod Holliman are Louisville teammates now, and they played with Miami DB Jamal Carter at Miami Southridge. One last one: Louisville's Brandon Radcliff and Miami's Deon Bush played together at Miami's Christopher Columbus High.

Enjoy your Sunday, folks.
