Former Alabama and St. Xavier golfer Justin Thomas qualified for the 2014 U.S. Open.

Kentucky native Kenny Perry is the oldest player in this year's U.S. Open field, while St. Xavier High School graduate Justin Thomas is among the youngest.

Both got under way early in Thursday's first round at North Carolina's Pinehurst Resort, with the Franklin, Ky., native Perry carding a 4-over par 74 and the Goshen, Ky., native Thomas turning in a 5-over 75.

The two sat tied for 100th and 120th, respectively, as of 5 p.m., behind leader Keegan Bradley at 3-under par.

Perry, who started the day at No. 10, birdied No. 14 but then bogeyed three of his next four holes. The Western Kentucky University product finished strong, though, with all pars and a bogey on his second nine.

Thomas sat just 3-over before his final two holes, then went bogey-bogey at the 17th and 18th.

"The same reason the #USOpen is great is the same reason it's brutal," Thomas tweeted after his round. "Played good and shoot 5 over, all I can do is bring it (tomorrow)."

Perry played with Americans Jeff Maggert and Kevin Sutherland. Thomas' grouping included England's Tom Lewis and American Craig Barlow.

University of Kentucky graduate J.B. Holmes teed off on No. 10 at 1:36 p.m. with American Gary Woodland and Canadian Graham, DeLaet. Lexington native Hunter Stewart, a Vanderbilt golfer, qualified as an amateur and teed off at 2:42 p.m. Holmes finished the day in a tie for 16th after a round of even-par 70. Stewart finished his first round at +5 after a 75, good for a tie for 106th

Perry's best-ever finish at the U.S. Open came in 2003, when he tied for third. This tournament marks Thomas' first major, and he got off to a strong start, defeating Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler on Tuesday in a practice round with Jordan Spieth.
