U of L's Tuesday workout addresses missteps

Tuesday evening's University of Louisville football practice returned to individual-focused workouts, running back Dominique Brown said.

After a physical, intensive team scrimmage Monday night, a session that also included 7-on-7s and situational work, the coaches used Tuesday to evaluate and work on some of the mistakes the players made Monday.

"Just fundamentals and technique, things we did wrong from the scrimmage," Brown said.

His biggest task is working on his "pad levels." That's been a repeated goal of head coach Bobby Petrino, who plans to use Brown as the No. 1 back and the goal-line power man.

What do they mean by "pad level" work?

"Just running lower," the 6-foot-2, 233-pound Brown said. "It was a big emphasis in the spring, and it carried over to camp. He tells me all the time to run with all of 6-2. Run with better pad leverage. I've been working on it."

Don't expect immediate results, he said. As a bigger back, getting into the flow of running with proper technique and positioning takes time after eight months away from games.

"It's not something that's going to happen overnight," Brown said. "It's going to take all the practices, all the drills we do, individuals — it's going to take all that."

Tuesday standouts

Brown highlighted his fellow running backs, plus redshirt sophomore quarterback Will Gardner.

"L.J. Scott did a great job," he said. "Corvin Lamb, Michael Dyer. ... We all just worry about being physical."

He said Gardner, his roommate, was "looking real good. ... It's a new process for them as well."

Notable

Redshirt junior offensive lineman Ryan Mack appeared to practice in full after leaving Monday's session about 30 minutes before it ended.

Quotable

"It's great. You have to come out and compete every day. They're trying to make you better." — Brown, on playing in a crowded backfield

Injury update

Though no status updates of receiver Matt Milton (back) or linebacker Stacy Thomas (hand) were given, neither was seen leaving practice Tuesday.
