Two Louisville Metro Police officers are on administrative leave after they shot a man dead Tuesday night in Valley Station.

Police said William Chad Mattingly, 38, opened fire on officers Rondall Carpenter and Skylar Graudick as he fled from them in the 11000 block of Grafton Hall Road. Carpenter and Graudick shot back, killing Mattingly. Mattingly, of the 7300 block of Kentucky Avenue, died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the coroner.

Carpenter, with the department since 2009, and Graudick, with the department since 2013, were unharmed in the shooting, said Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday, Carpenter and Graudick pulled over a vehicle with five occupants for an unspecified violation and approached on foot. The driver sped off around a corner and pulled into a nearby driveway on Grafton Hill Road, Conrad said.

One of the five people in the car ran toward the house and fired at least one shot at officers, Conrad said.

Three men and one woman remained in the car, police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said. Police took two of the four people who remained in the car into custody on outstanding warrants.

The officers involved are on administrative leave and pending a return to administrative duty, Smiley said.

The Public Integrity Unit continues to investigate the incident, which is normal procedure in a case involving an officer involved shooting.
