Tiger Woods shot a 3-over-par 74 in the first round of the PGA Championship Thursday at Valhalla, saying afterward, "That wasn't very good."

Woods, who withdrew from last week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational with a back problem, made four bogeys and one birdie en route to his 74.

"A lot of bad shots, and I know I've got to putt to the hole on all my lines," he said in a brief media interview outside the clubhouse. "For some reason I thought (the greens) would be a little quicker. I didn't make the adjustment at all. I had plenty of looks to turn my round around, and pull something even or even under par."

Woods called his surgically repaired back "a little bit stiff, but that's about it," and said he'd have treatment later in the day.

"I didn't play as well as I wanted to, and I didn't get a put to the hole. So that's not a good combo. I had the same opportunity as everybody else, and just didn't get it done."

At the time he finished, his 3-over put him nine strokes behind leaders Lee Westwood and Kevin Chappell at 6-under.

He said he was "dialed in" on the practice range before the round, "but unfortunately just didn't carry it to the golf course."

Of scores in general, he said, "Right now it's pretty bunched. I think 2-under is in the top 10. I just don't see (over) this golf course, guys going super low here. Unless we get some rain…. But the pin locations today were really tough."

Woods concluded: "I've got to get down to par by end of tomorrow, or at the end of my second round. If we get storms, it could be Saturday. If I get under par for two rounds, that will be right in the ballgame."
