Snow closes area schools; cold on the way

Students attending Jefferson County Public and Catholic Schools will be getting a chance to sleep in after the school district opted today to close its schools amidst the first snow storm of the season.

Oldham County Schools and Bullitt County Schools also decided earlier this morning to close schools today. After JCPS announced its closure, the Archdiocese of Louisville also announced its schools will be closing.

The makeup day for JCPS is April 2nd.

In Southern Indiana, where snow totals were predicted to be higher, several school districts were closed, including New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp., Greater Clark County School Corp., Clarksville Community School Corp., South Harrison Community School Corp. and Lanesville Community School Corp.

The National Weather Service of Louisville has issued a winter weather advisory until noon today.

JCPS spokesman Ben Jackey said the decision to close schools came after examining different parts of the county. He said it wasn't an easy call but one that was made in the best interest of all students in the system.

"There are parts of our district that are not an issue and parts that are an issue," Jackey said. "With a city as large as ours, there are going to be some areas that are worse than others."

He said western Jefferson County, as well as the northeastern part of the county, were seen as "problematic." He said also that some southern areas "are getting there."

"With the whole district, the issue was, if it's going to get colder and continue to snow, what would the ride home have been like?" Jackey said.

He added that JCPS officials will be back out on the roads again later today to see how much snow plowing has been done and how conditions look in order to get a sense of whether there may be another snow day again tomorrow. He said that a decision on another snow day will be another morning decision.
