3 questions with U of L wing Wayne Blackshear

Cardinal Wayne Blackshear drives the ball down the court during the scrimmage. He hauled down 11 rebounds and scored 20 points. Six new freshmen have joined the roster this year.

Perhaps no player enters the 2014-15 season with more at stake than Wayne Blackshear.

That's saying something, too, considering Terry Rozier and Montrezl Harrell are considered potential lottery picks in next year's NBA draft. But Blackshear's frustrating Louisville career has one final winter to turn the tide. He's struggled through injuries and inconsistency after coming to the Cardinals as a McDonald's All-American out of high school.

At Louisville media day on Sunday, the 6-foot-5 senior wing (and captain) acknowledged the importance of this season. In this edition of "3 questions," Blackshear sheds light on this offseason and why the upcoming campaign is so critical for him.

Your teammates say you've gone back to your high school game -- getting to the rim, attacking the basket. What made you want to get back to that part of your game?

Blackshear: I just want to show everybody what I can really do. I'm not just a spot-up shooter. I just took it upon myself to really stay in the gym and get back to what I can do.

How do you maintain that and produce on a consistent basis every single night?

Blackshear: It starts in practice. From (coach Rick Pitino) and just me getting on myself, just drilling it into my head, making it up in my mind what I'm going to do already.

You said in April that this was your last chance to do what you came here to do. Take us through your offseason approach to getting to where you want to be.

Blackshear: It was good. I didn't go home. I had to stay here. I know this is my last go-around. I had to really stay in the gym every day, nonstop, and just get my confidence back. I had to work my way back into Wayne Blackshear mode. I really don't want to speak on what I'm going to do or what I want to do. I'm just going to go out there and compete the best that I can.
