Record 201 horses pre-entered for Breeders' Cup

Familiarity has made the heart grow fonder, at least as it pertains to the Breeders' Cup World Championships returning to Santa Anita Park for an unprecedented third straight year.

A record 201 horses were pre-entered for next week's 13 races that make up the Breeders' Cup World Championships in Arcadia, Calif. The deadline was Monday, with the fields and rankings in the case of oversubscribed events, announced Wednesday.

The prior pre-entry record was 194 in 2011, when the Breeders' Cup last was at Churchill Downs and had 15 races.

Though conventional wisdom says the Europeans prefer cooler climates for horses who have begun growing winter coats, 38 overseas horses were made eligible for the four races Oct. 31 and nine races Nov. 1.

The Breeders' Cup recently lost two of its marquee performers in two-time Horse of the Year and Mile winner Wise Dan and two-time champion and defending Distaff winner Beholder. But the Breeders' Cup has proven over its first 30 years that, come race day, the absent stars won't overshadow those who show up, which this year will include up to 63 Grade or Group 1 winners. Among the countries represented are England, Ireland, France, Chile, Peru and — for the first time — Hong Kong, with Rich Tapestry in the Sprint.

The 1¼-mile Classic, America's richest horse race, attracted an overflow field of 15 horses (14 can start). The major plot line promises to be the first meeting between unbeaten 2-year-old champion Shared Belief and Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome. However, they'll also have to beat the other 3-year-olds: Belmont Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Tonalist, speedy Pennsylvania Derby winner Bayern, Travers winner V.E. Day, Candy Boy and UAE Derby winner Toast of New York.

The older horses in the Classic are headed by Grade I winners Moreno and Majestic Harbor, as well as the lightly raced but promising Cigar Street, trained by two-time Classic winner Bill Mott.

At stake for at least several of the competitors is Horse of the Year, along with the 3-year-old championship and champion older male.

Shared Belief never ran until less than two weeks before last year's Breeders' Cup. He then missed the Triple Crown with a lingering foot problem. But he beat older horses in the Grade I parlay of Del Mar's Pacific Classic and Santa Anita's Awesome Again.

"It's hard to expect a horse to be undefeated so long," trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, on a Breeders' Cup media teleconference, said of his 7-for-7 star. "We're very grateful he's come along and done whatever we've asked him to do."

Art Sherman, California Chrome's 77-year-old trainer, said he's throwing out the Derby winner's sixth-place showing in the Pennsylvania Derby, when the colt was bottled up in traffic in his first start since finishing fourth in the Belmont Stakes.

"There are a half-dozen horses who can easily win it," he said of the Classic. "It's going to be a great betting race. … Horse of the Year will be on the line. I get butterflies when I think about it. "

The $2 million Distaff on Oct. 31 attracted a field of 12 fillies and mares, including 2013 runner-up Close Hatches and Kentucky Oaks winner Untapable. Both have lost only once this year, with Close Hatches fourth in Keeneland's Spinster in her last start and Untapable fifth against males in Monmouth Park's Haskell before rebounding in Parx Racing's $1 million Cotillion.

"You always hate to see these fillies run a little bit of a stinker because you never know when they've had enough racing," said Bill Mott, trainer of Close Hatches and a five-time Distaff winner. "… I don't know that that's the case with her. … It's a little bit of a head-scratcher."

Five winners from last year are back: Goldencents (Dirt Mile), Ireland's Magician (Turf), Secret Circle (Sprint, as well as the now-defunct Juvenile Sprint in 2011) and Britain's Dank (Filly & Mare Turf), all looking to repeat. Ria Antonia, the adjudged winner of last year's Juvenile Fillies is in the Distaff.

Breeders' Cup President Craig Fravel said the event's popular "Win and You're In" program, where winners of selected races get their entry fees paid, helped grow the pre-entries to record levels. Also, this is the second year that the Breeders' Cup has paid $10,000 for travel expenses for every horse shipping from outside California and $40,000 for those shipping overseas.

Fravel said the Breeders' Cup racing office has "doubled and tripled their efforts" to recruit horses. He also cited NBC's coverage of select "Win and You're In" preps that started in June as keeping the Breeders' Cup "front and center for owners and trainers," along with a new dirt track at Santa Anita giving horsemen confidence in a fair surface.

"I go to a lot of these races not only in the United States, but around the world," he said. "Very frequently the first question after somebody wins a Breeders' Cup Challenge race is, 'Are you going, and what do you think your post position will be?'"

There could be another prior Cup winner, but Regally Ready needs seven defections to run in the 6-1/2-furlong, $1 million Turf Sprint, a race he captured in 2011. The Steve Asmussen-trained 7-year-old gelding is 5-for-8 this year, when he's been racing mostly at a mile.

Tom Robbins, chairman of the Breeders' Cup racing panel that ranks horses in order of preference when more than 14 go in a race, said the Turf Sprint (29 pre-entries) and $2 million Mile on turf (25) were the most difficult to rank. Speaking of the Mile, last year with Wise Dan there were 16 pre-entries, of which 10 started.
