Owner Rick Otey credits the woodwork in the new Donum Dei Brewery at 3211 Grant Line Road in New Albany to his silent partner and craftsman, Jonathan Ruff, who built the puzzle-piece wall behind the bar and the tables and chairs from a pallet of scrap maple from Koetter Woodworking in Borden, Ind. Kentucky is home to more than 40 craft breweries cranking out beer in cities both big and small.

We probably all know that Louisville and Lexington have become craft beer hotspots, with brands like Against the Grain and West Sixth expanding from single locations to huge community presences.

But as the industry grows nationally, it's also reached into smaller areas like Elizabethtown and Danville, where microbreweries can serve as community connectors.

Here, learn about one of the breweries that are fermenting in Kentucky.

Bio: We are now a brewstillery! Donum Dei Brewery will celebrate its third anniversary on March 17, 2018. We will release our 2018 version of our Drunken Unicorn — a Scotch ale aged in bourbon barrels. We will also begin releasing our spirits by the bottle and glass that day. We have a light and airy, conversational environment. We have eight to 10 beers on tap at all times and will soon sell whiskey, vodka, gin and brandy.

Top three beers:

  • Unicorn — A strong Scotch ale that's malt-forward with a hint of smoke on the back. 9 percent ABV
  • 812 Noveau — A wet-hopped IPA made with local Cascade hops, with a fruity finish. 7 percent ABV
  • NEbulae — A Northeast IPA that has a tropical fruit nose with a thicker mouthfeel. 7 percent ABV

Most inventive beer: Drunken Unicorn — our Unicorn ale aged in bourbon barrels. It has flavors of toffee, vanilla and caramel with a bit of smoke on the end to round it out.

Fun fact: We are also a distillery (the only one in the Metro area) so we are calling ourselves a brewstillery.

Edited for style and clarity.
