A sampling of beers at Apocalypse Brew Works on Mellwood Avenue.

Kentucky is home to more than 40 craft breweries cranking out beer in cities both big and small.

We probably all know that Louisville and Lexington have become craft beer hotspots, with brands like Against the Grain and West Sixth expanding from single locations to huge community presences.

But as the industry grows nationally, it's also reached into smaller areas like Elizabethtown and Danville, where microbreweries can serve as community connectors.

Here, learn about one of the breweries that are fermenting in Kentucky.

Bio: Welcome to our brewery, located in Louisville. Our brewery and taproom, "The Fallout Shelter," opened in May 2012, producing beer for the masses and for your survival. Our passion is in creating small-batch, fresh craft beer. We support sustainability with our solar-heated water, grain reuse, material recycling and the reuse of found objects and equipment used to build our brewery. With a combination of more than 40 years of homebrewing experience, our local, regional and nationally winning brewers are excited to be part of Louisville's great craft beer scene and brewing tradition.

Top three beers:

  • Apollo IPA — Tropical fruit, citrus, floral, lemon and grapefruity IPA.
  • Fallout Dust — After the blast, a sparkling of peppercorns to pepper your palate.
  • Watermelon "Crack" — Once you go "crack," you will be back for this fresh taste of endless summer.

Most inventive beer: Radiation Red, a wild sour ale.

Fun fact: The brewery cats are really running the brewery; we just work for them.

Edited for style and clarity.
