Jennifer Lawrence makes big local arts impact

The Jennifer Lawrence Arts Fund announced Wednesday it will be handing out nearly $200,000 in new grants to local arts organizations in an effort to promote and support arts excellence, access and education.

Six organizations received a total of $188,000 in grants, with some receiving as much as $55,000. The grants were given to "maximize the impact of the arts on economic development, education and the quality of life for everyone by generating resources, inspiring excellence and creating community connections," according to a release from Fund for the Arts, a regional non-profit arts organization.

The fund gave the following organizations grants focusing on excellence and innovation, access and education and youth arts training, according to the release:

  • $25,000 grant to Actors Theatre of Louisville to support capital improvements at the world-renowned theater
  • $20,000 grant to Commonwealth Theatre Center (formerly Walden Theatre/Blue Apple Players) to increase capacity of education and outreach programs
  • $25,000 grant to Kentucky Shakespeare to support the January 2017 production of "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts
  • $55,000 grant to the Louisville Orchestra to provide live music for identified Louisville Ballet and Kentucky Opera productions in the 2016-2017 season
  • $13,000 grant to the Louisville Youth Orchestra to expand the organization's training and alumni programs
  • $50,000 grant to support ArtsMatch for Access, a pilot program to increase access to the arts across Greater Louisville

The Jennifer Lawrence Arts Fund was founded earlier this year in support of Fund for the Arts, with proceeds from the inaugural Awards in the Arts in April, according to the release. An additional $30,000 in grants were awarded at the April event to six artists and organizations to support their work in transforming the local cultural landscape.
