U of L's Mitchell thinking less, attacking more

ATLANTA - After Louisville's 77-70 loss at Notre Dame on Wednesday, Donovan Mitchell wasn't all that thrilled with his performance.

Sure, the Cards' sophomore standout had just scored 20 points for the second consecutive game, but he was frustrated that he took as many shots as he did – and he was disappointed he missed several open teammates when he had the ball, even though he still had five assists.

But in Saturday's 65-50 win at Georgia Tech, when Mitchell again scored 20 points, he looked a lot more like the star he was against Indiana than the guard who forced quite a few shots at Notre Dame.

"I made a point at the beginning of the game to find open guys because I know (Georgia Tech likes) to dig a lot and slap down on defense," Mitchell said. "I feel like I hit a few guys on the wing who were open for 3s. Even though they missed, I'm still trying to find the right guys and become a well-rounded point guard."

Mitchell was credited with four assists against one turnover against Georgia Tech, and even as he attempted 15 shots, this time he felt like he was in control again.

He was 5-of-7 from 3-point range and is now 11-of-25 from long distance over the past three games. Making jumpers opens up Mitchell's entire offensive repertoire, teammate Deng Adel said last week.

"Just taking shots that I've always taken in practice and now I'm taking them in the game," Mitchell said. "Those same shots were falling in practice, now they're starting to come to fruition in games."
