Dozens of University of Louisville students gathered on campus Wednesday night to mourn the crippling loss of their peer, 20-year-old Savannah Walker, who was killed Sunday in a shooting at a local art gallery.

Mourners hold a copy of a program during the candlelight vigil for Savannah Jeanne Walker on the lawn of Grawmeyer Hall on the University of Louisville campus, Wednesday, March. 22, 2017 in Louisville Ky.

The candlelight vigil was held in front of Grawemeyer Hall, where Walker's family and friends took turns telling stories about the woman she was and mourning the future she deserved, which shattered in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Walker had gone to the Tim Faulkner Gallery in the Portland neighborhood over the weekend to see a concert with her friends. But the show was interrupted by gunfire, and Walker was shot in the chest. Her father, Dean Walker, has said his daughter was pushing others out of the way when she died.

During the vigil, some people called for an end to gun violence. Others mentioned a memory of Walker they'll cherish forever. Many spoke through tears, and a few broke down at the microphone and immediately were embraced by friends.

Walker's 12-year-old half-brother, Nicholas Brysselbout, thanked everyone for coming to the vigil.

"... I'm so glad that she has such an awesome family here in Kentucky, and to see all of her friends here now helps a lot with what we're all going through," he said. "I may have lost a sister ... but we all lost a friend and a family member."
