Interim basketball coach David Padgett said he's known known new assistant Trent Johnson for a long time, since Padgett's high school days in Nevada. Padgett says timing "couldn't have worked out better."

New Louisville assistant coach Trent Johnson signed a nine-month contract to join David Padgett's interim staff.

Louisville will pay Johnson $300,000 in salary, a copy of his contract obtained through a public records request shows.

Johnson's deal runs through June 30, the customary last day of men's basketball contracts at Louisville. Most assistant coaches sign one-year deals.

Johnson, 61, joined Padgett's staff after a year off from the sidelines. The former head coach at Nevada, Stanford, LSU and TCU spent the 2016-17 season traveling the country and watching practices or participating in coaching clinics.

The former Boise State star forward is the first full-time hire Padgett has made for his staff. Another opening was created Wednesday when Louisville terminated the employment of assistant Jordan Fair.

Padgett said Wednesday, before Fair was dismissed, that he potentially could add one or two more full-time assistant coaches to his staff.

Video coordinator Logan Baumann, director of basketball operations Michael Bowden and program assistant R.J. Evans were recently given permission by the NCAA to assist Padgett in practices.
