A worker was killed Wednesday after apparently falling down an elevator shaft at an apartment building under construction adjacent to the University of Louisville's Belknap Campus, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

Anthony Warner, 34, of the 2800 block of Fairview Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:20 p.m., deputy coroner Larry Carroll said.

He said that workers found Warner at the bottom of the elevator shaft, and he was not sure how far Warner fell.

He said an autopsy performed Thursday showed Warner's cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries.

He said that Louisville Metro Police's homicide unit is investigating and that U of L police were also at the scene Wednesday night.

The site, 2501 S. Fourth St., is being developed into more than 250 student apartments, as well as more than 7,000 square feet of retail space. It was formerly owned by the family of Metro Councilman Tom Owen.
