Some of the Atlantic Coast Conference looked sharp over college football's opening weekend. Much of it did not.

Highlighted -- or should we say lowlighted? -- by Wake Forest's five-first-down, 94-yard "performance" against Louisiana-Monroe, many of the teams in the ACC struggled.

Clemson got thumped by Georgia, and Syracuse and North Carolina State narrowly scraped by two FCS teams. That's, uh, not good. At least Georgia's a College Football Playoff contender.

Even Florida State didn't look so hot over the weekend.

But Louisville's defense shined in a 31-13 win over Miami, Duke and Pittsburgh put on impressive offensive displays and Virginia gave UCLA a heckuva fight.

Just about everyone in the league is taking next weekend off, so to speak, with nine of 12 games coming against what we might call walk-over opponents. Virginia Tech's Saturday night showdown with Ohio State is the best game of the bunch.
